Yorkshire and Humber consists of the following Counties: Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire.
The construction industry in Yorkshire & the Humber was among those initially hit hardest by the credit crunch, as the region suffered sharp declines in both 2008 and 2009. Despite a recovery last year, the value of underlying construction starts in 2010 was still 32% below the level seen in 2007.
Nevertheless, underlying starts on site did grow by 11% in 2010 with strong performances in both public and private sectors. Hotels & leisure, offices, and private housing all reversed two consecutive years of decline. In the public sector, community & amenity, medical, and education posted their second straight years of growth. In addition, the region had several large public and private projects reach site in 2010. Only civil engineering, industrial and social housing experienced a decline in underlying starts.
Although civil engineering suffered a 33% drop in underlying starts on site in 2010 it has been the strongest sector in 2011 thanks to funding for projects earmarked in October’s Comprehensive Spending Review and planning approvals which jumped in the final quarter of last year.
Despite a weak first two quarters across the region, Yorkshire & the Humber is expected to show some of the biggest gains in the UK over the rest of the year.
